「Maroon 5」の歌詞。すべての音は発音されていない。

若者に絶大な人気のあるロックバンドMaroon5。私も大好きです。私は英語の練習もかねてよくカラオケボックスに行き英語の歌を歌うことにしています。英語の歌は、抑揚がついていて、言葉だけの時より発音しやすい。また、音符に言葉を割り当てているため、息継ぎなどをまねすると英語のリズムを体得するのに役立ちます。そして、一番勉強になるのが聞き取りです。最近の英語の歌は一つの音節にたくさんの言葉を詰め込むため、単語の音を全部発音出来ない場合が多く、それでもしっかり英語として通じるように歌われています。これはネィティブ同士が話す場合と似ています。
実例で見てみましょう。下記はMaroon5の中でも有名な歌、「Harder to Breath」です。

さて、このような事は実は日本語でも無意識に行われています。日本人どおしなら音を多少省略しても、話している文面から落ちた音を補完して聞いているのです。私はかなり早口な方ですが、日本人の方から話した言葉を聞き返される事はまずありません。実際にはかなり音を省略しているはずですが、聞いている相手の頭の中に、その音節がインプットされているため、その音節を思い出させる音があれば無意識に連想出来るからです。
歌で言えば、私も大好きな桑田佳祐さんの音楽。決して聞き取り安い歌い方ではないですが、日本人なら理解出来るのはこのような事情です。
英語を聞くときに一つ一つの単語に注意を向けてしまうと、聞こえなかった音に耳を奪われ、全体の理解を妨げてしまいます。むしろ複数の単語の組み合わせである、連語を一つの音節としてとらえたら早口な英語でもきっと聞き取れるはずです。
